Staying indoors is, for now, the new normal. While certainly not the ideal scenario you had planned for spring, who says you can’t get your daily dose of fun even during these unusual times? We’ve compiled a list of activities that you can enjoy with your family and have a whale of a time while you’re at it. Chuck those video game controllers away – here comes the real fun.
Indoor Camping
An all-time favourite with kids of all ages, camping is a great family activity too. Don’t fret if you cannot pitch that tent out in the backyard; your living room can be turned into a campsite in no time. Round tarps with grommets work best for this activity, but a sturdy bed sheet will work fine too.
Clear the furniture away and make space for your very own indoor tent. You can amp up the camping experience with some shadow puppets or an eerie ghost story. If you’ve got a pair of walkie talkies you can communicate with your ‘fellow campers’ and get maximum fun during your lockdown camping.
French Cricket
This activity is from the good times archives. Bring out the cricket bats and tennis balls for a round of french cricket. The rules are quite simple, the players stand in a circle and try to bowl out the batsmen by hitting their legs. A run is scored each time the batter hits the ball without getting caught.
Though french cricket is best enjoyed outdoors, it can still be played inside. Just be sure to cover your expensive upholstered sofa before you start scoring those runs. Mind you the game can get quite competitive with some over enthusiastic kids trying to outdo each other. Your umpiring skills will definitely be tested.
Treasure Hunt
Missed out on the easter egg hunt? We’ve got something even better. Get your clan together for a treasure hunt through the house. Since you’re trying not to use the outdoor space, ingenuity is the name of the game here. Rise to the challenge of hiding clues in plain sight or tucked away in a forgotten corner of the house.
A treasure hunt is a surefire way to achieve some wholesome family time and also keep boredom at bay. A hunt that goes on for a couple of days will definitely add to its charm. You will have to get creative though, maybe throw in some activities like cleaning the room to find the clue or solving a riddle to move closer to the treasure. With the whole family involved a smashing time is guaranteed as you try and get to the treasure first.
Indoor Obstacle Course
How about getting some exercise while having fun? An indoor obstacle course is just what the doctor ordered. Fancy a tunnel of chairs or maybe crawling under the table? Your indoor obstacle course can be the perfect way to involve the kids and help them get that all important workout.
While objects in the house like furniture, toys, and plastic tumblers can be easily used for the obstacle course, be sure to cover up items with sharp edges. You don’t want any injuries while on the course.
Bowling/Skittles
Want endless hours of fun without stepping out of the house? Line up those pins and get cracking. The best part – you don’t even need those fancy bowling shoes. Yes, bowling at home is a thing and you can rustle up a bowling set in a matter of minutes. All you need is a tennis ball and some old plastic bottles of the same size and your family can spend some quality time competing together without squinting over that smartphone screen.
Looking to get crafty with that bowling set? Get hold of some old loo rolls and let your kids colour them in their favourite shades. Let them dry and you’ll have yourself a set of indoor bowling pins ready for action.
Just because you’re shifting indoors doesn’t mean you have to give up all those fun outdoor activities. With a little ingenuity and games like these, you will always have a way to keep the good times rolling and give your family something to look forward to every day. Stay inside, stay covered and get your game on.
