Autumn is right around the corner and with it comes dropping temperatures and the much needed relief from an unusually hot summer this year. Soon the trees will turn into all the shades of yellow, orange and red imaginable and the outdoors will promise the best times the year has to offer. Whether you’re looking for some time away from the mundane or are planning to give your little ones a surprise, autumn’s cooling temperatures and natural colors make it the right time to get adventurous with the whole family.
Kite Flying
With the breeze getting stronger in the autumn months, it’s perfect for getting out in the open with those colourful kites in tow. Young ones especially love the thrill of getting in control and maneuvering the kite as it climbs through the air; for the adults, it’s an activity that takes them back to their childhood days.
Modern kites are available in a wide selection of sizes and materials. From large dragons to butterflies to aircraft, there’s no shortage of ideas to get the kids excited. Keep them involved from the start by taking them to the hobby shop and let them pick their favourite kite. Make sure you grab string as well. For little ones, it’s easier to be in a space with plenty of room. If your yard is small, think about heading to the local park. In no time you’ll have that kite-flying duel in full swing, battling for sky supremacy.
Nature Walks
Getting out in the open with the family can be a wholesome experience for adults and kids alike. Take those hiking shoes out of the cupboard, pack in some cold cut sandwiches and a flask of tea and you’re all set for your time on the hiking trail. Since autumn usually brings in more wind and rain, it’s best to keep the kids warm and dry during the walk so be sure to either wear or bring along some warm jumpers, hats and raincoats. Once you’re off, let the little ones lead your group and have them collect colourful leaves and smooth stones as souvenirs of their grand adventure.
Leaf Jumping
There’s nothing quite like jumping into a huge pile of leaves with the kids and letting them enjoy the outdoors before it gets too cold and wet to venture outside. Leaf jumping is an ideal activity to include the pets in as well. There really is something pleasantly satisfying for both adults and kids about jumping into that big, crunchy pile. Just be sure to watch out for any allergies that your little ones might have and don’t forget to dust off thoroughly after. It’s also best to bring out that handy tarp from the garage and pile up the leaves on top of it for easy cleaning once all the hikinks start to wind down.
Baking Challenge
Not quite a lazy Sunday brunch but an equally amazing opportunity for some good old family time. Baking together as a family is a great autumn activity that can help you bond better with the kids. Smaller kids can be given charge of mixing the flour while the elder siblings can be on oven duty. All that is left is to lay out the table covers and enjoy a feast together as a family.
Some of the items that work best for a family bake-off are pizzas, pies, muffins, and flapjacks. If you are all in the mood for some pudding – and who isn’t in the mood for good pudding – watch some episodes of The Great British Baking Show to get some ideas that are great for the whole family.
Stargazing
A great activity to get the kids curious about all things astronomical, stargazing in Autumn with the family can turn into a fun nightly activity. Give your kids some binoculars and ask them to spot the North Star, The Plough, Ursa Major, or even a passing comet.
Make your family stargazing even more fun by having some hot chocolate while sitting by the bonfire after your spotting adventure comes to an end.
