Staying home out of necessity can drive you more than a little stir crazy. Your movements are curtailed, your normal level of social interaction is severely diminished, and your daily schedule is thrown completely out of whack. If you’re able to turn your perspective about things around, however, you can use this time to acquire new knowledge and skills that can help enhance your career or even give you a way to express yourself. With that in mind, we have put together a list of things you can do to add to your repertoire. Read on and don’t let the lockdown blues get to you.
Paint It… Not Black
Have you always had a creative flair but a busy office schedule kept you from pursuing it? Now is the right time to hone your skills and get creative. Painting perhaps? Learning how to knit or maybe even poetry – whatever you fancy. It’s time you took the tarp off your easel and let those creative juices flow. With ample time on your hands during the lockdown, you can squeeze in a couple of hours after the kids are down for a nap, after dinner, or as an early morning kickoff to your day. Whatever you choose, be consistent with your scheduled time and you’ll see it pay dividends quickly. With your mind working creatively during these quiet times, you will not only fill yourself up with positive energy but will also find yourself more relaxed and content.
A New Language
Didn’t pay attention in the Spanish class at school and still regret it? This is the perfect opportunity to brush up on your language skills. It’s easier than ever before. All you need is a decent internet connection and some time. Look up tutorial videos for the language of your choice and start learning right away. Hopefully, by the time the restrictions are called off, you’ll have plenty of skills in a language that you always wanted to speak. Some top favourite languages include French, Mandarin, Spanish/Portuguese, and German.
Code Your Time Away
If computers are your thing, learning how to code should be at the top of your list. With so many fancy apps and programs doing the rounds, you never know: the coding skills you pick up during the lockdown might land you your dream job. The web is full of information that will lead you in the right direction. Start with the basic tutorial videos if you’re new to coding or jump straight into professional forums if you’re at an intermediate level. With technology advancing at breakneck speeds, your newly acquired coding skills will definitely hold you in good stead.
Get Cooking
Yes, you can probably cook to save yourself from starvation, but how about learning to whip up a gourmet quality meal? Imagine inviting your friends over after the lockdown and treating them to exotic food from far away lands. What’s better? You can even do it outdoors in the backyard, along with the family. So no more excuses, take those outdoor bbq covers off and get cooking. Some cuisines that are simple to learn yet high on the flavor scale: Indian, Mediterranean, Mexican and Korean.
Musical Glory
Knowing how to play a musical instrument is great. With the lockdown in place, you can easily brush up on your guitar skills or even get that saxophone out of the closet and learn some new tunes. With so much stress incorporated in being socially isolated, finding a quiet corner in the house and devoting some time to music will help bring down those anxiety levels.
